Fort Monroe's Casemate Museum
An incredible story unfolds inside the granite walls of "freedom's fortress." A row of artillery emplacements, or casemates, transformed over time into officers' quarters, holding cells for former Confederates including Jefferson Davis, and now museum, a tale of freedoms sought, denied, gained and defended unveils itself around every corner. The Casemate Museum provides the back-story for your visit to Fort Monroe and highlights the site’s role in over 400 years of America's unfolding drama; first as a colonial outpost to Civil War Union stronghold—epicenter of Contraband Refugees—home to several US Army Artillery and Training Schools and now National Monument.
The Museum is located inside the inner fort at Fort Monroe at 20 Bernard Road, Fort Monroe, VA 23651. It is open Tuesday –Sunday 10:30 am -4:30 pm. Closed Mondays (except Memorial Day and Labor Day) and closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission is free. For more information, or to book a tour please call (757)788-3391.
